This is an old map of Jeju Island made in the 1770s, in the late Joseon period. Early maps of Jeju Island showed the island as roughly potato-shaped, later changing to a sweet-potato shape, but this map has an entirely different character from either of these two forms. It renders Hallasan Mountain and the surrounding oreum (small volcanic cones) three-dimensionally to emphasise the grandeur of Hallasan, and records the names of its peaks in detail. It even marks the island's location at sea, making clear that Jeju is an island. The boundary between Jeju-mok and Daejeong County is shown with a red line, the road network linking the three counties is indicated, and the names of pastures, orchards, harbours and the like are all recorded. Twenty-four compass directions are marked around the edge of the map, and Haenam, Gangjin and Jangheung in Jeolla Province, together with nearby Japan and China's Shandong, Yangzhou and Hangzhou regions, and even Annam, are marked in detail, so that the map also functions as a sea chart. It is an important work for the study of Jeju Island's industry, defences, villages, sea routes and mapmaking techniques in the 1700s.
