Seated Bukjijangsa Temple Stone Ksitigarbha
북지장사석조지장보살좌상 · 北地藏寺石造地藏菩薩坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBukjijangsa Temple in Daegu was founded in 1192, the 22nd year of King Myeongjong of Goryeo, and this statue was discovered buried in the ground behind Daeungjeon Hall of the temple; it survives in complete form. The face has a gentle expression and a composed bearing; the left hand holds a wish-fulfilling jewel, while the right hand rests on the knee with the fingertips pointing downward. The robe covering both shoulders has drapery folds carved in thin, weakly formalised lines, indicating a later date. Judging from the form of the head and the jewel held in the hand, the statue appears to represent Ksitigarbha, the bodhisattva who saves beings suffering in hell, and from its composed bearing and gentle expression it is presumed to be a work of the late Unified Silla period.
