Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the entrance gate of the Chungcheongdobyeongmajeoldosayeong, the headquarters of the army commander (byeongmajeoldosa) of Chungcheong Province, which stood within Cheongju Eupseong, the walled town of Cheongju. The entrance gate of a military camp was generally called a wonmun, with walls running left and right from it to enclose the camp. The Chungcheongdobyeongmajeoldosayeong originally stood at Haemi-hyeon in South Chungcheong Province, but was moved to this site in 1651, the second year of King Hyojong of Joseon. Until 1988 the gate was mistakenly known as 'Cheongnyeonggak' and recorded in various publications as having been built by Yi Byeong-jeong, magistrate of Seowon-hyeon. It measures three kan across the front and two kan to the side, with a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof whose sides form the shape of the character for 'eight' (八). It is a two-storey gate tower raised on tall square foundation stones: the lower storey has a door fitted at the centre for passage, while the upper storey has a timber floor enclosed by a railing. The Hoseo Eupji and the Cheongju Eupji, local gazetteers, clearly record that a pavilion called Jeonggongnu stood within the military camp. As the camp contained only two pavilions, Tonggunnu and Jeonggongnu, and the 'Chungcheong Byeongyeongdo' and 'Cheongju Eupseongdo' maps show Tonggunnu as a separate two-storey building standing to the west, inside the gate tower, it follows that Jeonggongnu was in fact the name of this gate tower itself. It is a fortress structure that preserves, largely intact, the style of entrance gates used at army and naval camps (suyeong) in the late Joseon period.
