Hanbyeokdang Hall
한벽당 · 寒碧堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pavilion, built by cutting into the cliff at the foot of Seungamsan Mountain, was erected in 1404, the fourth year of King Taejong, as a private villa by Choe Dam, who had rendered great service in the founding of Joseon. Clear water flows beneath the pavilion all year round, and because the water, dashing against the rocks and scattering like white jade, is so cold that it feels bracingly sharp, the pavilion was given the name Hanbyeokdang, meaning roughly "Hall of Cold Jade." A renowned scenic spot of the Honam region, Hanbyeokdang was visited without end by poets and literati who came to compose verse and enjoy refined pursuits, and travellers on the road would also stop here to rest. Although it is now difficult to find it exactly as it once was, its refined form, in harmony with its surroundings, and its open view still make passers-by pause.
