After all of the buildings of the Jeju-mok government office had burnt down, Choe Hae-san, the regional commissioner (anmusa), rebuilt Honghwagak and several other structures in 1435, the seventeenth year of King Sejong. The Honghwagakgi was written by Go Deuk-jong to record the circumstances of this reconstruction. The text briefly describes the geography and history of Jeju Island, then praises Choe Hae-san's character and his benevolent rule over the people, before recording the history of Honghwagak's construction and the reason it was so named. It also notes that Go Deuk-jong himself wrote and hung the three-character signboard reading 'Honghwagak' (弘化閣). The Honghwagakgi and the Honghwagak signboard are both held today by the Samseongsa Foundation of the Go, Yang and Bu clans.
