Buinsa Temple Stone Lantern

This octagonal stone lantern stands in front of Daeungjeon Hall at Buinsa Temple. It follows the typical form of a stone lantern, with a three-tiered pedestal set on a square base stone, topped by a fire chamber that held the light and a roof stone above. In the pedestal, on either side of the central pillar, the lower stone is carved with an inverted lotus pattern and the upper stone with an upright lotus pattern, arranged symmetrically. The fire chamber was brought from another temple site to restore the lantern and has windows on all four sides. The roof stone has long, thin eaves, with all eight corners curving upward. At the top, only the round base carved with a lotus pattern survives; the finial above it has been entirely lost. Although the central pillar of the pedestal has a slight crack, the lantern survives in an almost complete state, its carving delicate and refined. With each part in balance and harmony, it is an outstanding work of the Unified Silla period.
