This is the set of printing woodblocks for the collected poetry and prose of Nuljae Bak Sang (1474-1530), a scholar and literary figure of the early Joseon period. He passed the special state examination (jeongsi eulgwa) in 1501, the seventh year of King Yeonsangun, entering government service as a Jeongja (proofreading official) at the Gyoseogwan (Office of Editorial Review), and after holding various posts he served as magistrate of Naju-mok in 1529, the twenty-fifth year of King Jungjong. He was a man who took the lead in faithfully putting his learning into practice, and he conducted government affairs with fairness and integrity. His writings are divided into poems (si), rhyme-prose (bu), prefaces (seo), records (gi), postscripts (bal), memorial texts (jemun), and essays (mun), and rest on a calm, understated lyricism refined through inner reflection rather than being spontaneous or direct in expression. The woodblocks comprise a total of twelve volumes: seven of the original collection and five of the supplementary collection. The first edition was published in 1547, the second year of King Myeongjong, when Im Eok-ryeong, magistrate of Geumsan, issued the posthumous collection of his writings; it was published again in 1694, the twentieth year of King Sukjong, when Kim Su-hang gathered the pieces that had been missing, combined them with the original collection, and had it edited and carved. After the blocks were damaged in a disaster in 1841, the seventh year of King Heonjong, Jo Cheol-yeong, magistrate of Gwangju, had the characters recarved and gathered together the pieces that had again been lost, bringing the total to eighteen works. The surviving woodblocks are double-sided, each block printing four pages, and their sizes are not uniform.
