Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krNongamjinjeok is an album mounting the autograph letters of Kim Chang-hyeop (1651-1708). It originally consisted of five volumes named for the Five Elements - Metal (geum), Wood (mok), Water (su), Fire (hwa), and Earth (to) - but only four volumes, Metal, Wood, Water, and Earth, survive today. The writings contained in Nongamjinjeok total eighty-seven pieces: eighty-four letters, one gimun (record), one poem, and one postscript. The letters were written between October 1695 and December 1704, and most were sent to Kim Si-jwa (1664-1727), a distant nephew eleven degrees removed and a disciple of Kim Chang-hyeop. The letters in Nongamjinjeok were mounted into an album in 1838 by Kim Seong-geun, a descendant four generations removed from Kim Si-jwa, from letters that had been handed down within the family for generations. Of the seventy-eight letters included in Nongamjinjeok, only ten were included in Nongamjip, Kim Chang-hyeop's collected works; these ten commonly concern Confucian theory or education. The letters included in Nongamjip underwent editing during compilation and proofreading, such as the deletion of parts of the original text as needed, and in some cases traces of this editing remain. This work is therefore valuable material that can supplement the "Letters" section of Nongamjip, and is also significant as a manuscript in Nongam's own hand.
