Seosang-ri Three-story Stone Pagoda
서상리삼층석탑 · 西上里三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis three-storey stone pagoda stands at the site of the former Yanghwasa Temple. No trace of the temple itself remains nearby; only the pagoda still stands guard over the old site. It consists of a three-storey pagoda body set on a stone platform (gidan). The lower part of the platform is currently buried underground, making its exact form difficult to determine, but it is presumed to have had two tiers: that is, an upper platform tier is set on a lower tier whose upper portion alone is now visible, and what first catches the eye are the corner pilasters carved at the four corners and the bevelled slope of the topmost stone. The pagoda body is tall at the first storey but narrows sharply from the second storey up. Although this marked reduction in the body above the second storey gives a somewhat unbalanced impression, the simplicity of each part lends the pagoda a refined beauty, marking it as a stone pagoda of the late Unified Silla period.
