보은 법주사 세존사리탑 · 報恩 法住寺 世尊舍利塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krWhen King Gongmin of Goryeo visited Beopjusa Temple, he had part of the Buddha Sakyamuni's sarira (relics), kept at Tongdosa Temple, brought here, and this reliquary pagoda (budo) was erected to house them. Built on a basically octagonal plan, it has a pagoda body set on a three-tiered base of lower, middle and upper stones, finished at the top with a finial. On the base, the upper surface of the lower stone slopes at an angle, the middle stone has a pillar carved at each corner, and the upper stone is decorated with an upright lotus design. The round body of the pagoda itself is left plain, and the roof stone's steep upper slope eases off as it nears the edge. The finial consists of a large disc-shaped support bearing a jewel-shaped ornament (bojoo). Overall this pagoda has a compact, modest appearance, and is said to have been made in 1362, the 11th year of King Gongmin of Goryeo.
