KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Records state that this Seated Avalokitesvara was made in 1698, regilded at Seongdoam Hermitage in Yeongam, Jeollanam-do, and enshrined at Daeheungsa Temple in Haenam. In 1925 it was moved from Daeheungsa, its parent temple, to Gwaneumsa Temple in Jeju by the monk Anbong Yeogwan, who had re-founded Jeju Gwaneumsa in 1908. The statue is 75 cm in overall height, with a face height of 14 cm, shoulder width of 34 cm, knee height of 13 cm and knee width of 47 cm. Displaying the typical style of Buddhist images from the late 17th century, it is a life-size, dignified figure wearing a separate three-peaked crown. On the front of the crown are eight large flower patterns, with further ornament to either side, typical of crowns from the late Joseon period. The full, rounded modelling and the serene rendering of the eyes, nose and mouth, together with the supple folds of the robe, are regarded as an outstanding work of its time.
