These are the woodblocks for the collected works of the Joseon-period scholar and writer Gwon Deuk-gi (pen name Manhoe, 1570-1622) and his son Gwon Si (pen name Tanong, 1604-1672), totalling 610 blocks. Gwon Deuk-gi placed first in the state civil examination in 1610, the second year of King Gwanghaegun, and was appointed jwarang, a sixth-rank official post, in the Ministry of Rites, but as politics grew chaotic under King Gwanghaegun, who confined the queen mother to the West Palace and had Prince Yeongchang killed, he gave up his post and spent his life wandering the country. The Manhoejip consists of 328 blocks, produced in 1635, the thirteenth year of King Injo, and in 1712, the thirty-eighth year of King Sukjong. The blocks were carved on both sides of pear wood and alder wood, except for five blocks carved on one side only. Gwon Si was appointed tutor to a royal prince in 1636, the fourteenth year of King Injo, and held posts including jwarang in the Ministry of Works, royal secretary, and Deputy Magistrate of Hanseongbu. When the ritual-propriety dispute (yesong) arose in 1660, he submitted a memorial supporting Yun Seon-do, and for this was denounced by fellow members of the Westerner faction and forced to withdraw from office. The Tanongjip consists of 282 blocks, produced in 1738, the fourteenth year of King Yeongjo. The blocks are of alder wood, with 269 of the 282 carved on both sides and the remaining 13 on one side only. Because these woodblocks contain material on factional political theory and the study of ritual propriety (yehak), they are valued as important material for research into Confucian thought. They were kept at Dosanseowon Confucian Academy until Sungmogak Hall was built at their present location in 1987 to house them.
