This is a seated image of the Medicine Buddha (Yaksayeorae), set on a square pedestal with a square halo (gwangbae) attached to its back. The hair is rendered like a hood, and the large, square face, with its thick eyebrows, small eyes, long nose and well-proportioned mouth, gives a stable but somewhat unrefined impression. The body, its chest sparsely modelled, has prominently rendered shoulders and arms, while the lower body is disproportionately tall and large, showing the distinctive sense of proportion typical of Goryeo Buddhist images. The right hand hangs down and the left hand rests on the knee holding a medicine bowl; these, together with the two feet placed on the knees, are rendered in a crude, oversized manner that, combined with the figure's overall proportions, gives the image a very familiar, endearing character. The robe, which covers both shoulders, is densely carved throughout with raised, convex folds, and its collar is turned down slightly into a U-shape and folded back for variation. The pedestal bears a simply rendered lotus design, and the halo, which resembles the back of a chair, is carved with a formalised pattern. On either side of the main image stand bodhisattva figures in the Silla style, bare above the waist and wearing a skirt below, with expressions similar to the Buddha's own; yet the whole displays the distinctive idiom of Goryeo sculpture, which suggests that the image was made during the Goryeo period.
