Seated Sinmu-dong Rock-carved Buddha
신무동마애불좌상 · 新武洞磨崖佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis statue, located below Buinsa Valley, is a Buddha image carved in relief on a large rock exposed above ground. The head is covered with small snail-shell-shaped curls, and the elongated face gives an impression of fullness. The shoulders are broad and dignified, and the robe draping both shoulders is rendered with stiff, rigid folds. The right hand is raised with the palm facing outward, while the left hand hangs down with the palm also facing outward. The pedestal on which the Buddha sits is carved with lotus flowers facing both upward and downward, and the upward-facing lotus petals are further decorated with floral patterns. The halo, or gwangbae, is divided by a line into a head halo and a body halo; the head halo is carved with bracken-fern patterns, and its edge is decorated with flame patterns. Judging from sculptural features such as the elongated face and the stiff, rigid robe folds, this statue is thought to have been made during the Goryeo dynasty.
