A yuheobi is a stele erected to commemorate the traces of a worthy figure of the past. This stele was set up to honour Jo Hyeong, sobriquet Chwibyeong (1606-1679), and stands on the old site where he was born. Jo Hyeong was a civil official under King Hyeonjong of Joseon; over more than forty years in office he left many achievements, and rose as far as the post of Daesaheon (Inspector-General). The Busang Ilgi, a diary he wrote after completing an eleven-month journey to Japan, is valued as an important source for the history of Korea-Japan relations in the seventeenth century. The stele has a base stone at the bottom, with the body of the stele and its capstone carved from a single stone and set on top. It has the unusual form of being wider than it is tall, and the eaves of the capstone are raised sharply upward as if bearing something up. Erected in 1873, the tenth year of Emperor Gojong of Joseon, the stele is not especially fine in form, but it holds important documentary value for the study of local history of the period. As Jo Hyeong left no descendants, the stele had been neglected for a long time, but it is now designated and preserved as a Gwangju Metropolitan City tangible cultural heritage.
