Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the vessel that held the sarira (relics) of State Preceptor Jajeong: a celadon jar inlaid with a chrysanthemum design, 15.2 cm in diameter, 7.7 cm in overall height, with the lid measuring 3.1 cm high and the body 5.3 cm high. Jajeongguksa was one of the sixteen State Preceptors of Songgwangsa Temple. Although detailed records do not survive, he is known to have served as abbot from the 19th year of King Chungnyeol of Goryeo (1293) to the 27th year of his reign (1301). On the lid, a large circle is inlaid in white slip on the top surface, surrounded by four smaller circles; inside the circles, chrysanthemum patterns are inlaid in black and white, while clouds and cranes are carved in the spaces between them. Around the side of the lid, a lightning-bolt pattern and a row of small dots are inlaid in white slip. At the centre of the body is a line dividing the upper and lower sections, and around the rim a lightning-bolt pattern and a row of small dots are again inlaid in white slip. Around the lower part of the vessel, a band of lotus petals is inlaid in black and white. The colour of the glaze, an opaque jade-green, reflects the character of the late Goryeo period.
