Donghwasa Temple Yeomburamcheong Stone Pagoda
동화사염불암청석탑 · 桐華寺念佛庵靑石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda stands in the front courtyard of Yeomburam Hermitage, which belongs to Donghwasa Temple, still firmly in its original position. A cheongseoktap is a pagoda made of jeompanam, a fine-grained slate once used for making inkstones; apart from its granite base stones, this pagoda is built entirely of that material. The pagoda rises from a three-tiered platform. When first erected it would also have had a foundation and body stones, but today only ten roof stones remain, stacked one upon another. The roof stones are badly damaged, and small stones have been wedged in here and there to prop them up, a rather forlorn sight. Each roof stone has two-tiered supports on its underside, and its upper surface slopes gently; the stones are thin, and the four corners curve sharply upward, giving the pagoda a light, buoyant charm. The proportions of the roof stones are not especially elegant, but the small pagoda, set on a broad platform, conveys a sense of stability. It is presumed to have been built during the Goryeo period, when cheongseoktap of this kind were widely popular.
