Go Bong Collected Works Woodblocks
고봉문집목판 · 高峰文集木板

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the set of woodblocks for the collected works of Gi Dae-seung (1527–1572), pen name Go Bong, who during the reign of King Seonjo of Joseon led Neo-Confucian scholarship in the Honam region and stood as an equal rival to Toegye Yi Hwang, a towering figure of Korean Neo-Confucianism. Gi Dae-seung is well known for the episode in which he exchanged letters with Yi Hwang for eight years on the Four-Seven Debate (the debate on the Four Beginnings and the Seven Emotions), and he made a great contribution to developing Joseon Neo-Confucianism into a field of study in its own right. The set totals 474 woodblocks, comprising: the 3-volume Wonjip (Original Collection) of Gi Dae-seung's poetry and prose, which forms the core of the collection; the 2-volume Sokjip (Supplementary Collection), which fills in omitted sections; the 1-volume Byeoljip Burok, which compiles the poetry and prose of his colleagues; the 1-volume (in two parts) Nonsarok, an edited compilation of the scripture lectures he gave; the 3-volume Wangboksseo, which collects the letters exchanged with Yi Hwang; the 1-volume (in two parts) Igi Wangboksseo, which separately gathers the portions of those letters concerning i-gi (principle and material force) and the Four-Seven debate; and the 4-volume (in first, middle, last and supplementary parts) Juja Munnok, which Gi Dae-seung wrote on Zhu Xi studies before he met Yi Hwang. Although the blocks were carved in the 17th century and are therefore not especially old, they are woodblocks of considerable significance among those surviving in the Honam region.
