Stone Lantern at Maitreya Daewonji Site, Chungju
충주 미륵대원지 석등 · 忠州 彌勒大院址 石燈

This stone lantern stands facing Woraksan Mountain, placed between the Standing Stone Buddha in Mireuk-ri, Goesan (Treasure) and the Five-storey Stone Pagoda in Mireuk-ri, Goesan (Treasure). Each part of the lantern is based on an octagonal plan. A three-tiered base of lower, middle and upper sections supports the fire-chamber stone that holds the light, above which sit the roof stone and the finial. The ground stone and the lower base stone are carved from a single block, and the lower base stone is decorated with an inverted lotus design. The middle post is of moderate height and simple in form. The upper base stone bears a lotus design that mirrors the one on the lower base stone. The fire-chamber stone has windows cut into all four sides so that the light can spread out. The roof stone's eight corners are slightly upturned. At the top, a low octagonal base supports a boju, a bud-shaped ornament, forming the crowning decoration. Together with the standing stone Buddha and the five-storey stone pagoda beside it, this lantern is presumed to be a work of the Goryeo period.
