Neunggyeonnansa Temple

Provincial Tangible Heritage

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are vessels used at Songgwangsa Temple for serving food. They are said to have been brought back by State Preceptor Wongam, the sixth head monk of Songgwangsa Temple, on his return from Yuan China. The technique used to make them is so unusual that, whichever way the vessels are stacked, upward or downward, their sizes match perfectly. When King Sukjong of Joseon ordered exact copies to be made, his craftsmen found it impossible to reproduce them. This gave rise to the name Neunggyeonnansa (能見難思), meaning "visible to the eye, yet impossible to fashion." Twenty-nine pieces are currently held in the Songgwangsa Temple Museum.
