A padu is a distinctively shaped ornament fitted to the end of the hilt of a bronze or iron sword; it is generally believed to have added weight to the end of the hilt so that the sword would be balanced when held in the hand. While most padu are small, single cross-shaped pieces, this bronze padu (dongpadu) takes the form of a double cross, made of two cross shapes joined side by side. A single horse stands at the end of each of the four arms, four horses in all, and at the centre of the cross sits a large knob in the shape of a rectangular post. In Korea, the body of material evidence needed to establish the forms and dates of sword-hilt-end ornaments is extremely scarce, and what does exist remains poorly organised, so that further research in this area is urgently needed.
