This was the house where King Cheoljong (r. 1849–1863), the twenty-fifth king of Joseon, lived before he ascended the throne. Once he became king, Jeong Gi-se, the Yusu (royal commandant) of Ganghwa, rebuilt the house and named it Yongheunggung Palace. Its roof is a paljak, or hip-and-gable roof, whose side profile is shaped like the character 八 (meaning "eight"), and it is built in the mindori style, in which the beams and purlins are joined directly at right angles on top of the column heads, without decorative bracket sets. Yongheunggung Palace was built following the layout of an ordinary private residence, in the manner of Yeongyeongdang Hall and Nakseonjae Hall at Changdeokgung Palace, giving it a simple, unadorned character. Within the grounds stand a stone stele and its pavilion, marking the site as the former house where King Cheoljong once lived.
