Seated Sangdong-ri Stone Buddha
상동리석불좌상 · 上洞里石佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone Buddha statue stands beside the Sangdong-ri Three-story Stone Pagoda in Gonggeun-myeon, Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon State. Only the mandorla, the halo-shaped backing behind the figure, is damaged and scattered; the pedestal on which the Buddha sits and the body of the statue itself remain intact. The round, full face carries a smile at the corners of the mouth, giving a compassionate impression, and reveals the idealised realism found in Buddha statues from Silla's golden age. The same idealised realism is also evident in the broad chest and narrow waist, in the natural gesture of the hands resting on the knees, with the left palm turned upward and the fingertips of the right hand pointing toward the ground, and in the flowing folds of the robe draped over both shoulders. The pedestal is an octagonal lotus seat. The lower tier is buried in the ground, so its exact form cannot be confirmed, but the circular upper tier carved with lotus flowers and the middle tier, carved on each face with an ansang (an arched, eye-shaped motif), show features typical of ninth-century pedestals. Judging from its gentle expression, soft robe folds and octagonal pedestal, this statue appears to be a ninth-century Unified Silla work that faithfully carries on the eighth-century Buddhist sculptural style.
