An incense burner is an implement used in temples to burn incense, symbolising the cleansing away of the mind's impurities. This example, 20.2 cm high with a mouth diameter of 19.5 cm, stands on a tall, trumpet-shaped pedestal. The mouth has a wide rim carved with eight cloud motifs. Around the middle of the body four circles are set, each inscribed with a Sanskrit character, while the remaining space is filled with a scrolling vine motif; at the very bottom of the body, lotus petals are carved in bold lines. On the trumpet-shaped pedestal, clouds and inverted lotus petals appear at the top, with a vine scroll carved below. The body and pedestal were made separately and then joined, with a small semicircular decorative support at the point of connection. The whole body was first carved with the design, and silver was then inlaid into every pattern using the eunipsa (silver-inlay) technique, giving the piece the splendid appearance typical of Goryeo-period incense burners. It displays stylistic features characteristic of the late Goryeo period in particular, making it an important resource for the study of Buddhist metal craft.
