Standing Sinmudongsamseongamjimaaeyaksa Temple Buddha
신무동삼성암지마애약사여래입상 · 新武洞三省庵址磨崖藥師如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Buddha of Medicine carved into a rock face in Sinmu-dong, Dong-gu, Daegu. Above the bare head rises a large topknot-shaped usnisha, and the ears hang down long. The shoulders are naturally rendered, and simple, repeated drapery folds decorate the whole front, giving a sense of volume. The right hand is lowered, lightly grasping the hem of the robe, while the left hand is raised below the chest holding the bead-shaped medicine bowl that is the emblem of the Buddha of Medicine. Although weathering has worn the surface so that details are no longer sharp, the overall expression still reveals a fine countenance in the Tang Chinese style, and the statue is valued as an example that helps in understanding how rock-carved Buddha imagery changed from Silla technique to that of Goryeo.
