Samneunggye Valley Gokseongagyukjon Buddha
삼릉계곡선각육존불 · 三陵溪谷線刻六尊佛

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krCarved in incised line on the east and west faces of a natural rock cliff are two Buddha triads, six figures in all, whose refined and accomplished carving places this work at the very top of Korea's line-engraved rock-carved Buddhas. The principal Buddha of the triad on the right is a seated Sakyamuni, flanked by attendant bodhisattvas who stand facing the principal Buddha with gentle expressions, treading on lotus flowers. The principal Buddha of the triad on the left is also Sakyamuni, but shown standing, while the attendant bodhisattvas on either side kneel on lotus-patterned pedestals in a posture of offering, facing the principal Buddha. The exact date of carving and the identity of the sculptor are not known for either triad, but they are generally presumed to date from the Unified Silla period. At the top of the cliff on the right, traces remain of a Buddhist hall once built there to protect these images.
