Woodblock Edition Ryudeung Buddhist Scripture Books and Documents (set) held at Seongwangsa Temple
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The woodblock-printed Buddhist scriptures and related texts held at this temple comprise 59 titles in 164 volumes. Of these, 16 titles are Buddhist scriptures, 33 are collections of the recorded sayings of patriarchs (josa eorok), and 10 are ritual texts; apart from the 10 ritual texts, all were scriptures and patriarchs' sayings that were read as textbooks by student monks at seminaries (gangwon). Among them, three titles were carved before the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598: the Chimun gyeonghun, the Yesu sipwang saengchilje uichanyo, and the Buljo yeokdae tongjae. These Buddhist texts not only bear colophons (gangi) that differ from period to period, but also include material bearing on eonmun (vernacular Korean script) and gugyeol (interpretive reading marks added to Chinese texts for Korean readers) — namely the Jijang bosal bonwon-gyeong, the Mitagyeong eonhae, and the Wangnang banhonjeon — making them valuable material for research in bibliography, linguistics and Korean literature. This complete set of 59 titles of woodblock-printed Buddhist scriptures and texts was originally kept at Yeongwonsa Temple on Jirisan Mountain in Hamyang County, South Gyeongsang Province, before being moved here and placed under preservation by the monk Suyeol in April 1980.
