Three steles stand side by side within a single stele pavilion. The one on the left is the Igongjebi, erected by the residents of Daegu to honour the achievements of Yi Seo, who served as magistrate (pangwan) of Daegu. At the time, a stream ran through the centre of Daegu, and the area suffered great damage from flooding whenever it overflowed. Yi Seo, who took up his post as Daegu magistrate in 1776, the year King Jeongjo of Joseon ascended the throne, recognised the residents' hardship and in 1778 used his own funds to build an embankment and divert the watercourse. Freed from the damage of flooding, the residents named the newly diverted stream 'Sincheon' and the embankment 'Igongje,' and in 1797, the 21st year of King Jeongjo, erected this stele to commemorate him. It originally stood on the embankment west of Suseonggyo Bridge, and after being relocated several times, came to rest at its present site. The stele in the centre was re-erected in 1805, the 5th year of King Sunjo, because the adjoining Igongjebi had grown worn, so that Yi Seo's achievements would be commemorated forever. The stele on the right, the Gunsuihubeomseonyeongsebulmang Stele, was erected in 1899 (the 3rd year of the Gwangmu era) to honour the achievements of Yi Beom-seon, who served as Daegu magistrate under Emperor Gojong. In 1898 a great flood damaged the lower section of Igongje, endangering the Daegu town walls; Yi Beom-seon completed repairs swiftly and without imposing hardship on the people, relieving the residents' anxiety. In gratitude, the local residents erected this stele in 1899, and it has since been preserved together with the Igongjebi. All three steles were raised by the residents themselves to honour men who had served as magistrates of the Daegu region, and carry great significance as a record of those who helped shape the Daegu of today.
