Seated Geumseongsan Mountain Stone Buddha
금성산석불좌상 · 錦城山石佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a seated stone Buddha, 1.27 m in overall height, that had lain buried at the site of an old temple on the southern slope of Geumseongsan Mountain. Revered by folk belief for its efficacy in curing illness and bringing the birth of sons, it has recently been enshrined as the principal Buddha image in a newly built hall named Jowangsa Temple. The head is comparatively large in proportion to the body; the face has round, full cheeks and jaw, and the neck is rendered short. The shoulders are curved and narrow, yet the figure gains a sense of stability from its round belly, and the outlines of each part of the body are rendered thick and clear. The robe clings to the body and covers the knees, its folds simplified. Both hands are brought together at the chest, the right hand grasping the index finger of the left; the carving of the hands and feet shows a degraded, formulaic technique. The pedestal consists of upper, middle and lower tiers, all square in plan; the upper and lower tiers are carved with lotus-petal patterns and blind niches (ansang, an arched niche-shaped motif), and the middle tier bears carved lotus buds. The degraded detailing and the simplified rendering of the drapery folds are features characteristic of Buddhist sculpture of the Goryeo period.
