Seated Daeboksa Temple Iron Buddha
대복사철불좌상 · 大福寺鐵佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a seated iron Buddha enshrined at Daeboksa Temple, 1.03 m in height and 0.8 m across the knees. The head bears small snail-shell-shaped curls, above which a low topknot-shaped bun (usnisa) is formed. The nearly square face has relatively small eyes, and the ears extend down to the shoulders. The robe wraps the left shoulder, its collar falling vertically from that shoulder, with a knot visible at the left armpit; the robe folds run diagonally from the knot towards the right side of the waist. In terms of hand gesture, the right hand is raised to shoulder height with thumb and middle finger touching, while the left hand is bent over the knee, palm upward, also with thumb and middle finger touching. The seated posture has both feet raised onto the knees with the soles facing upward, and diagonal robe folds are shown across both knees. Given the somewhat unnatural rendering of the face and the stylised treatment of the robe folds, this statue is presumed to have been made during the Goryeo period.
