Seongyosaseuwitjeu House
선교사스윗즈주택 · 宣敎師스윗즈住宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis missionary residence was built between 1906 and around 1910, during the period of full-scale missionary activity in Daegu, and was home to missionaries including Ms Seuwitjeu, after whom it is named, Henderson, the fourth principal of Gyeseong School, and Campbell, the first president of Gyemyeong University. The building blends traditional Korean and Western styles harmoniously. Its foundation is built in level courses of wall stone taken from the Daegu eupseong (town wall), which had been erected in 1736, the twelfth year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, and salvaged when the wall was later demolished; above this, red brick was laid mostly in stretcher bond with a single course of headers. The roof was originally a gabled roof covered in Korean-style tiles, but was later replaced with galvanised sheet metal before being converted back to a tiled roof. In 1981 the building was acquired by the Dongsan Medical Foundation and is now used as a missionary museum. On the first floor, visitors can see various Bibles, missionary relics and photographs documenting the introduction of Christianity to Korea, while the second floor displays a model of the Tabernacle and items relating to the Old and New Testaments purchased in Israel.
