Hwanghakjeong Pavilion
황학정 · 黃鶴亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a sajeong (a pavilion at an archery ground) built north of Hoesangjeon Hall at Gyeonghuigung Palace for the practice of archery. It was built in the second year of the Gwangmu era of Emperor Gojong (1898) and moved to its present location in 1922. It measures four bays across the front and two bays deep, and has a hip-and-gable roof whose sides take the shape of the character 八 (eight). This site originally held Deunggwajeong Pavilion, one of the Five Archery Pavilions (Osajeong). The Five Archery Pavilions were pavilions built at five archery grounds in the western part of the walled capital: Deungnyongjeong Pavilion in Okdong, Unnyongjeong Pavilion in Samcheong-dong, Daesongjeong Pavilion in Sajik-dong, Pungsojeong Pavilion in Nusang-dong, and Deunggwajeong Pavilion in Pillun-dong. All five have now disappeared, but archery events are still occasionally held here, showing something of the spirit of the martial men of old.
