Ganghwa Yusubu Government Office
강화유수부 동헌 · 江華留守府 東軒

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is one of the government offices (gwana) of the Joseon dynasty: a dongheon, the main hall where local administrative affairs were handled, serving here as the centre of administration for the Ganghwa region. In 1769, the 45th year of King Yeongjo, the Yusu (governor) Hwang Gyeong-won named it Hyeonyulgwan. It has since been repaired many times, so that its original appearance can no longer be traced. It measures eight kan (bays) across the front and three kan in depth, and has a hip-and-gable roof (paljak roof), whose side gable takes the shape of the character 八, meaning "eight". The signboards reading "Myeongwiheon" and "Igwandang" were written by Baekha Yun Sun (1680–1714), a renowned calligrapher and scholar of the period.
