Seonwonsa Temple Bronze Bell
선원사동종 · 禪院寺銅鐘

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Joseon-period Buddhist temple bell is housed in Daeungjeon Hall of Seonwonsa Temple in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do, standing 66 cm high with a mouth diameter of 47 cm. At the top of the bell, the dragon-shaped hanging loop takes the form of a single crouching dragon, its detailed features cast separately and then attached. The body of the bell is divided by four horizontal lines into five bands. At the very top, eleven small circles are arranged in a row, each inscribed with a single Sanskrit character. Below this, bodhisattva figures appear at four points, with flowers, canopies, and crowns arranged irregularly between them. In the widest, central band, four square bell-loop panels are set, their borders decorated with a wave pattern. Of the three remaining bands, the middle one is carved with lotus and vine scrollwork, and the upper and lower bands bear inscriptions. Though heavily worn and difficult to read, the bell's name, "Bohyeonsa jungjong" (the mid-sized bell of Bohyeonsa Temple), can still be made out. Though the workmanship is somewhat rough, the decoration is varied, giving the bell a distinctive appearance.
