Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a record painting depicting the capture of an armed Japanese merchant ship that had invaded the waters off Dangpo, near present-day Tongyeong in Gyeongsangnam-do, on 4 June 1604 (the 37th year of King Seonjo). It was bestowed on meritorious officials to commemorate the victory, and is believed to be an heirloom kept by No Hong (1566–1622), who is thought to have received it at the time. The composition falls into three parts. At the top is the title, Dangpoapbadaseung Album Map, written in seal script, with a colophon to its right reading "the sixth month of the gapjin year," confirming that the work was made in 1604 (the 37th year of King Seonjo). The middle section shows a naval battle scene symbolising the Battle of Dangpo, and the lower section lists the names and ranks of the twenty-eight men who took part. The scene is rendered in a bird's-eye perspective, with a Western-style armed Japanese merchant ship shown at the centre engaged in combat with four Joseon vessels. The ships fly command flags, and the Joseon navy is depicted charging boldly at the Japanese ship. Among surviving paintings that include the panokseon, the Joseon navy's principal type of warship, this is likely the earliest in date. The ranks recorded in the roster at the bottom show that the battle was fought jointly by officers from the three southern provinces of Chungcheong, Jeolla, and Gyeongsang, including Yi Gyeong-jun (b. 1561), Naval Commander-in-Chief of Gyeongsang, Jeolla and Chungcheong; Sin Yeo-ryang (1564–1606), Deputy Commander of the Gyeongsang Right Naval Garrison; and Song An-jeong (1554–1626), Deputy Commander of the Chungcheong Naval Garrison, together with garrison commanders, manho, and gwongwan from each garrison across the three southern provinces.
