Heunghae Bae Clan Imyeonjae Head House, Andong
안동 흥해배씨 임연재종택 · 安東 興海裵氏 臨淵齋宗宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the head house of the Bae clan, built in the 13th year of King Myeongjong of Joseon (1558) by Bae Sam-ik, whose pen name was Imyeonjae. It originally stood in Domok-dong, Yean-myeon, but was relocated to its present site in 1973 owing to the construction of Andong Dam. Three buildings survive: the main house, the Geumyeokdang detached hall, and the shrine. The main house is a single-storey building measuring five bays across the front and six bays deep, with a straight gabled roof whose sides take the shape of the character 人 (person). Geumyeokdang, the detached hall, takes its name from the pen name of Bae Sam-ik's son, Bae Yong-gil (1556–1609). It houses framed plaques reading 'Imyeonjae' (臨淵齋) and 'Domokchon' (桃木村), said to have been written by Yi Hwang, pen name Toegye, himself. The shrine measures three bays across the front and two bays deep, with wind-blocking boards fitted to the sides of its straight gabled roof.
