Seongjusa Temple, standing to the west of Bulmosan Mountain in Changwon, was founded in 835 (the tenth year of King Heungdeok of Unified Silla) by the State Preceptor Muyeom to guard against raids by Japanese invaders. This pagoda, one of the many cultural heritage items within the temple, has a three-storey body raised on a two-tier foundation. At present only part of the lower foundation tier survives, while the upper tier bears pillar-shaped carvings at the four corners and the centre of each side. The first-storey body stone is carved with a simple door-panel design. The roof stones have four courses of eaves-support on the underside, with gently curving eaves lines, and the four corners turn up sharply. At the top sits a stone shaped like a boju, a flower-bud-shaped ornament, serving as a finial, though it is not the original piece. With its simplified technique and unadorned style, the pagoda is considered a work of the Goryeo dynasty.
