Seokpajeong Villa
석파정 · 石坡亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis was a villa belonging to Heungseon Daewongun, the birth father of Emperor Gojong of Joseon (r. 1863–1907). It originally belonged to Kim Heung-geun, and after Gojong's accession to the throne, Daewongun made use of it. After the Korean War it was used as an orphanage and hospital, among other purposes, and today it is a privately owned building. As the hill facing the pavilion is entirely rock, Daewongun named it Seokpajeong ('Rocky Slope Pavilion'); it is also known as the Samgye-dong Pavilion. Set against a backdrop of great boulders, a stream flowing down the rocky hill, and pine trees standing in the garden, Seokpajeong is a place of great beauty.
