Sunhwa-ri Three-story Stone Pagoda
순화리삼층석탑 · 淳化里三層石塔

This three-story stone pagoda stands within the grounds of Sunchang Girls' Middle School. Roof-tile fragments thought to date from the Baekje period have been found at the site where the pagoda stands, suggesting that it was once the site of an old temple from that era. When the pagoda was originally erected, the foundation is thought to have had two tiers, but today the lower tier is buried underground and only the upper tier is visible above ground, with the three-storey body of the pagoda built up above it. Pillar shapes are carved at the four corners and in the centre of each face of the foundation, while on the body stones of the pagoda's main section pillar shapes are carved only at the corners. The thin, broad roof stones curve gently upward at their four corners, and their undersides each have five tiers of eave supports. A high plinth for supporting the stone above sits atop each roof stone, a feature characteristic of the late Unified Silla style. As an early Goryeo-period pagoda standing in what was once Baekje territory, it conveys the elegant curvilinear beauty distinctive of Baekje style.
