Three-story Stone Pagoda at Bongnimsa Temple Site, Changwon
창원 봉림사지 삼층석탑 · 昌原 鳳林寺址 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda remained at the site of Bongnimsa Temple; it was taken away during the Japanese colonial period and later recovered. Having been badly damaged through neglect, it was moved to its present location and re-erected by the Changwon Office of Education in 1960. The foundation supporting the pagoda's weight is thought to have had two tiers, but repeated relocation has damaged much of it, leaving only part of the upper tier remaining. The three-storey body of the pagoda is relatively well preserved, so its original appearance can still be readily seen. The first-storey body stone, which had broken into two pieces, has been joined back together; apart from pillar shapes carved at its four corners, it is otherwise unadorned. An unusual feature is a door-panel motif carved on the second-storey body stone, a departure from the usual style in which such motifs are carved on the first-storey body stone. The roof stones covering each storey have four tiers of eave supports on their undersides, and their slopes descend steeply. At the top, a noban (a base for the finial) and a bokbal (an overturned bowl-shaped ornament) are set in sequence, forming the finial. The overall composition and carving technique are relatively free in style, suggesting that the pagoda was made in the early Goryeo period.
