Sejon Reliquary Pagoda of Ansimsa Temple, Cheongju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

It stands to the west of Ansimsa Temple's Daeungjeon Hall, alongside the Sejon Sari Stele (Śarīra Stele of the World-Honoured One). According to the inscription on that stele, composed by Wang Bal, the pagoda's whereabouts were unknown for a long period until it was discovered here at Guryongsan Mountain. It was moved to Gucheon-dong in 1881, the eighteenth year of Emperor Gojong, and then in 1900, the fourth year of the Gwangmu era, the monks Gwang-u and Deungwon moved it again and re-erected it at Ansimsa Temple. The reliquary pagoda takes the form of a stone bell, about 200 cm tall, set on an octagonal lower base stone placed on a square, single-tier platform stone. No pattern is carved on any face of the lower base stone, and no cushion stone was provided to support the pagoda body; a cross-shaped groove is cut into the upper surface of the lower base stone. The pagoda body likewise bears no pattern or inscription, and the finial section is marked off by a band of twenty-eight bead-like roundels. The finial itself takes the form of a jewel with a pointed upper end. Judging from its overall style, the pagoda is presumed to be a work of the late Joseon period.
