Dorimsa Temple Site Three-story Stone Pagoda
도림사지삼층석탑 · 道林寺址三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda stands on the hillside behind Dorim village. Roof-tile fragments inscribed with the characters for 'Dorimsa' found nearby showed that this was the former site of Dorimsa Temple. Dorimsa is thought to have been founded before the Goryeo period and to have continued in use until the mid-Joseon period, but it was entirely destroyed by fire, and only the site now remains. The pagoda consists of a two-tier base supporting the whole structure, above which rise three storeys of the body, topped with a finial. On the corners and at the centre of each side of the upper base, pillar shapes have been carved, forming reasonably distinct figures. The body tapers appropriately from storey to storey, giving the pagoda a neat, balanced form. The roof stones each have three tiers of eaves-supports on the underside, and their gently curving slopes rise vigorously at the four corners. Overall the pagoda shows a compact yet beautiful proportion and clearly displays the style of Goryeo-period stone pagodas. When the pagoda was repaired around 1973, a square reliquary was discovered inside it and is now kept at the Buyeo National Museum.
