Jangnyang Statue Dongjeong Rock-carved Stele, Namhae
남해 장량상 동정마애비 · 張良相東征磨崖碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele stands on the beach to the right of the pier in Seonso village. It is called the Jangnyangsang Dongjeong Rock-carved Stele because Jang Ryang-sang, a general of Ming China, is said to have subjugated the east and had the writing inscribed on the rock. The stele takes the form of a large natural rock whose upper surface has been ground flat into a rectangle and inscribed with text. Around the rectangular border, a vine pattern has been carved beautifully and finely. The inscription states that Yi Yeo-song and Jin Rin came to Namhae in Joseon as reinforcements and defeated the Japanese forces, and it has the character of a victory monument asserting the superiority of the Ming troops. Historical records contain no account of a battle between Ming naval forces and the Japanese at Seonso village, which casts doubt on the content of the inscription, but it is presumed that the text was carved either immediately after the Battle of Noryang or the following year, in 1599, the 32nd year of King Seonjo. Although the stele has no connection to the Namhae region itself, it is valuable as a rock-carved stele for a Ming general whose history has not been clearly established. Because it records in detail the victory of the Ming generals Yi Yeo-song and Jin Rin over the Japanese forces, it is said to have been included in the Joseon Government-General's list of monuments to be destroyed for commemorating the defeat of the Japanese invaders during the Japanese colonial period.
