Janghancheol, who was born in Aewol-ri, Aewol-eup, Jeju City, set out for Seoul on 25 December 1770 to sit the state civil service examination, but ran into a storm and drifted ashore in the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa). The Janghancheorui Pyohaerok is the book Janghancheol wrote after being rescued, following his drift to the Ryukyu Islands, by a merchant ship bound for Japan, and after various twists and turns making his way to Hanyang (present-day Seoul) to sit the examination, in which he failed, before returning home. As a work of maritime geography recording the sea routes, ocean currents and monsoon winds of the time, it has great documentary value, and it is equally valuable as a collection of folk tales, since it richly records legends current in Jeju at the time, including the Samseong myth of the island's three founding clans, the legend of Baengnokdam and Grandmother Seolmundae, and the legend of the Ryukyu crown prince.
