Stone Stupa of Baegyangsa Temple
백양사 석조부도 · 白楊寺 石造浮屠

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stupa stands on a hill to the west of the temple precinct of Baegyangsa Temple. With its house-shaped roof and flattened, spherical body stone, it shows the typical style of a late Joseon-period stupa. It is a complete example, retaining every element: the lower, middle and upper stones of the base, the spherical body stone, the octagonal house-shaped roof stone, and the finial. The roof stone is carved in the form of an octagonal roof, its eaves rendered very thickly, giving an overall impression of heavy solidity. Two round holes remain at the corners of the eaves, which appear to have held attachments such as wind-bells. It is said to be the stupa of Baegyang-daesa, the founding monk of Baegyangsa Temple, though its style does not match that of Silla-period stupas. The stone-dressing on its surface is generally rough, but the stupa was built as a stand-alone structure with its own dedicated precinct, and it is relatively large in size. This style is typical of late Joseon stupas and is known to have been popular mainly across Gyeongsang Province.
