Heungjusa Three-story Stone Pagoda
흥주사삼층석탑 · 興住寺三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda stands in front of the Daeungjeon Hall of Heungjusa Temple and is in a severely damaged state, with some parts missing or buried. The base (gidan) supporting the pagoda consists of two tiers, but part of the lower tier is buried in the ground, so its original form cannot be confirmed. The topmost stone of each tier has its upper and lower edges chamfered, giving a blunted impression, and the four corners and the centre of each side of the upper tier are carved to resemble pillars. Only the first two storeys of the pagoda's body remain, but judging from the proportions, it is thought to have originally been a three-storey stone pagoda. On each side of the first-storey body stone, a square outline is carved, within which another pattern may once have been placed, though it is no longer clearly visible. The roof stones, though badly worn, have three-tiered eaves supports on their undersides at both the first and second storeys, and the four corners curve slightly upward. At the third storey, a body stone and roof stone of an unusual appearance, apparently added at a later date, have been supplemented. The pagoda is thought to have been erected during the Goryeo period, around the same time as the founding of the temple. Some damaged parts have been restored, but they do not harmonise well with the original, giving the pagoda an awkward appearance.
