Seonunsa Temple Yeongsanjeon Hall Wooden Buddha Triad
선운사영산전목조삼존불상 · 禪雲寺靈山殿木造三尊佛像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a gilded wooden seated image of Sakyamuni Buddha enshrined in the Yeongsanjeon Hall of Seonunsa Temple, Gochang, together with standing attendant images of Ananda and Kasyapa. The seated Buddha at the centre has a head that is large in proportion to the body, and a face close to square in shape. Below the neck, three narrow folds are rendered; the robe covers both shoulders, and its folds are simplified. The chest is broad, and beneath it the upper edge of the lower garment is rendered as a straight line. The image is enshrined on a wooden lotus-pattern pedestal encircled by a sixteen-sided railing. The attendant figures on either side wear elaborately decorated crowns and hold lotus flowers in their hands. Being made of wood gives it a somewhat stiff quality, but as a wooden Buddha image it is a rare and outstanding work.
