Stone Lantern of Ssanggyesa Temple, Hadong
하동 쌍계사 석등 · 河東 雙磎寺 石燈

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is an octagonal stone lantern standing within the precincts of Ssanggyesa Temple, on the southern foot of Jirisan Mountain. It would originally have had a fire-housing stone, where the light was kindled, set on a three-tiered pedestal, capped with a roof stone and topped with a finial, but the fire-housing stone and roof stone are now missing. The lower pedestal stone is carved with an inverted lotus pattern (petals turned downward), and the upper pedestal stone with an upright lotus pattern (petals turned upward) symmetrical to it below. The central shaft is slender and long; it had broken partway and was later reassembled. Where the fire-housing stone and roof stone are missing, only the finial that once crowned the lantern remains, resting on a low base, and elements such as an inverted bowl-shaped ornament and a lotus-bud-shaped jewel finial survive. Because the fire-housing stone and roof stone are lost, the lantern's original appearance cannot be known, but from the plainness of the central shaft and the refined lotus-pattern carving on the upper and lower pedestal stones, it is presumed to be a work of the Unified Silla period.
