Buyeo Hongyang-ri Five-story Stone Pagoda
부여홍양리오층석탑 · 扶餘鴻良里五層石塔

This is a five-story stone pagoda remaining at a site where a temple called Allyangsa Temple is said to have once stood. No trace of the temple survives today; only fragments of roof tiles, porcelain, and earthenware are scattered around the pagoda. The lower part of the pagoda's actual foundation has not been confirmed, but a base stone has been laid, and upper and lower foundation stones have been set in place. The lower tier is presumed to have consisted of several stones, though some are now missing, while the upper tier is made of two broad stones. However, owing to subsidence of the central axis, the upper foundation is left tilted. Above this rise the five stories of the pagoda body. The first-story body stone bears no decoration, while from the second story upward, pillar shapes are carved at the corners. The roof stones have clearly carved three-tiered eaves supports on their undersides, gently sloping surfaces, and slightly upturned corners. The finial (bo-ju, a lotus-bud-shaped ornament) remaining at the top was added later during repairs. Although the foundation is somewhat crude, this is an elegant Goryeo-period pagoda; the sudden decrease in height from the first-story body stone to the second story and above, together with the proportions shown in the roof stones, evoke the tradition of Baekje stone pagodas.
