Seonunsa Temple Yukcheung Stone Pagoda
선운사육층석탑 · 禪雲寺六層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone pagoda from the Goryeo period stands in the courtyard in front of Daeungjeon Hall at Seonunsa Temple. A single-tier foundation bears the weight of the whole structure, above which rises a six-storey body. Pillar shapes are carved at each corner of the four sides of the foundation and of each body stone of the pagoda. The roof stones, which look thin, have five-tiered supports on their undersides, and the eaves curve up lightly at both ends, giving a light, buoyant charm. The finial at the top survives largely intact. Overall, the body stone narrows sharply from the second storey onward, and the third-storey roof stone is also narrower than the second, giving a slightly diminished sense of proportion. As a pagoda from the former Baekje region, it shows traces of Baekje pagoda style in features such as the roof stones, and can be regarded as an early Goryeo-period work imbued with strong local character.
